We recommend that you get thoroughly acquainted with the standard because the following requires advanced know-how of the RDS 81346 standard. The "A Guide to RDS - Reference Designation Systems" handbook contains more detailed information.

A Syntax

Let's take it from a fundamental approach. A project can contain several contexts and each context is governed by a syntax.

A syntax manage how you can build your structure and the syntax is generally governed by three terms; the order of syntax elements, aspect and classification tables.

The Syntax Editor

  1. Navigate to Setup

  2. Select Syntax

  3. Select Add Syntax

  4. Fill out a name and description for your syntax.

  5. Select Create Syntax

Select the newly created syntax to start modifying your syntax element.

  1. Select Add to create your syntax element

  2. Fill out a name

  3. Select the Aspect

  4. Select the numbering range

  5. Select the appropriate classification table

  6. Select Save

The syntax element is now added under "Elements" and you can drag the newly created syntax element to your structure.

  • Choose the appropriate depth.

It is now that you set the rules and boundaries for your CORE structure, and you do that by placing the syntax elements in order. We advise you to build it as simple as possible (see above), but you can build it the way you want!

Congratulations! You have now created your first syntax.
